What is Mindfulness Based Therapy?

Mindfulness is a state of present-moment awareness, focusing on thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. Mindfulness or meditation-based programs can be utilized as a precursor or adjunct intervention.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a structured program that teaches individuals to cultivate mindfulness, the ability to focus on the present. It aims to reduce stress, improve well-being, and enhance overall health. MBSR incorporates practices like meditation, yoga, and mindful movement to help individuals better manage stress and cope with various physical and emotional challenges.

MBSR is a powerful, evidence-based approach to managing stress and enhancing overall well-being. MBSR has demonstrated efficacy for individuals with a wide range of medical and mental health diagnoses. Through the practice of mindfulness, individuals learn to respond to life’s challenges with greater clarity and calm, rather than reacting on autopilot. This shift can reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and support emotional balance. Whether you’re navigating daily stress or seeking deeper resilience, Soul Center Holistic health offers these practical tools to help you feel more grounded, present, and connected.

Defining Mindfulness

Mindfulness is most commonly conceptualized as involving two key components:

(1) intentional regulation of attention to and “awareness” of the present moment.

(2) nonjudgmental “acceptance” of the ongoing flow of sensations, thoughts, and/or emotional states. (Baer, Smith, Hopkins, Krietemeyer, & Toney, 2006 ; Bishop et al., 2004).

Many individuals are often plagued by excessive and maladaptive degrees of self-blame, fear, and anger. A mindfulness or meditation practice can help to cultivate greater levels of self-empathy and self-compassion. Compassion and empathy can serve as potential mechanisms of change and foster a meaningful purpose in healing from psychological trauma (Gilbert & Tirch, 2009 ; Tesh, Learman, & Pulliam, 2015 ).
